Our History
ANAM is unlike other commercial cognitive assessment software in its research history approach. During his tenure in the 1980s as Director of the Office of Military Performance Assessment Technology (OMPAT), and Director of the Military Operational Medicine Research Program, Dr. Fred Hegge recognized the importance of cognitive health and the need for a consistent and well-developed approach to cognitive assessment. He and his team worked with a diverse set of neuropsychological testing tools, including the Walter Reed Performance Assessment Battery, to develop a standardized set of cognitive assessment tools that could be used effectively in diverse conditions including varied climates, altitudes and toxic conditions. Dozens of the finest neuropsychological and human performance researchers and scientists contributed to ANAM during decades of laboratory and clinical research. ANAM is referenced in more than 450 peer-reviewed independent research studies and technical reports.
In addition, ANAM has a long and continuous history of research use in the Department of Defense, including sports concussion studies at West Point and TBI assessment during Ft. Bragg Paratrooper training. ANAM has the most comprehensive military research and clinical use of any cognitive assessment technology.
ANAM Use History
Government customers include the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Laboratories, National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as international military organizations including the New Zealand Defense Technology Agency and the Singapore DSO National Laboratories. ANAM was the first cognitive test with military normative data cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration in a new device category created in 2015, and maintains FDA clearances for concussion and cognitive change.
In the U.S. military, ANAM has been used for pre-deployment baselines and post-injury return-to-duty since 2008, with over 3.75 million assessments conducted. Vista LifeSciences has collaborated with US Special Forces in the development of our mobile version of ANAM to ensure field-readiness.
Non-government customers include top medical research institutions and hospitals such as Yale, MIT, Harvard and Stanford, global pharmaceutical companies, and mental health clinicians in private practice.
